Marine insect genus Halobates is the only insect group which includes five species that have successfully colonized in the open ocean. Halobates is known to form aggregations, suggesting that this behavior has an important role in their life history. For the quantitative analysis of the behavior of each individual in aggregations of H. japonicus which live along the coast of Ishigaki Island, we prepared a coordinate measurement system utilizing a digital movie camera. We tested the usability of this experimental system in the field, and checked the characteristics and conditions required for quantitative measurements. In this paper, the theory of our coordinate measurement system, the details of the experiments on Ishigaki Island and the information obtained as useful for constructing a more efficient system are described. We also describe some interesting behaviors of Halobates found in our records. |
